And here at Milly’s Café, we think that’s a feeling worth talking about honestly, instead of brushing aside.

Growing Up With the News Cycle

Many of you reading this — whether you’re a young adult or a curious kid sitting next to a parent — have grown up hearing about climate change for as long as you can remember. Wildfires, floods, hurricanes, droughts, record-breaking heat: these aren’t rare “special report” events anymore. They’re part of the regular news cycle.

For some of you, that has created a real and heavy question:

“What kind of world am I going to inherit?”

That is not an irrational question. It’s a human one.

The Research Backs This Up

Researchers have taken this seriously too. A U.S. study published in 2025 looked at how young people’s perceptions of climate change connect to their well-being, mental health, and even their life plans — things like whether to have kids, where to live, what career to pursue. Other research has found meaningful levels of concern about climate change among adolescents and young adults more broadly.

In other words: if you’ve felt this weight, you are not being dramatic, and you are not alone.

Concern Is Not the Same as Surrender

Here’s the distinction we want to make, and we think it matters more than almost anything else in this conversation:

Acknowledging a serious problem is not the same thing as surrendering to hopelessness.

We’re not going to tell you everything will be fine. We don’t know that. Nobody does. Promising you a guaranteed happy ending wouldn’t be honest, and honesty is something we care about a lot here.

But here’s what we can offer: the tools to become the kind of person who can look a hard problem in the eye and still ask good questions — instead of shutting down or checking out.

The Questions That Build a Different Kind of Hope

When the weight of “big picture” problems feels like too much, we’ve found it helps to bring the questions back down to a human scale. Ones you can actually act on:

What can I learn? Understanding a problem, even partially, is a form of power.

What can I do? Not everything, not alone, but something.

Who can I work with? No one solves big problems by themselves. Community matters.

What can I contribute? Your specific skills, interests, and voice matter — even now, even young.

What kind of person do I want to become? This might be the most important question of all. It’s the one that’s fully within your control, no matter what happens in the world around you.

That’s the kind of hope we want to build here — not the kind that ignores hard truths, but the kind that gets stronger because of them.

Parents, Read This Too

If you’re a parent reading this alongside your child: these questions work for you too. Kids and teens take their emotional cues from the adults around them. Modeling honest concern and steady, engaged action — rather than either denial or despair — is one of the most valuable things you can offer them.

This is part of an ongoing series here at Milly’s Café on growing into an informed, emotionally mature, and connected adult.
